Dear Friends,
While the Little Sisters of the Poor’s departure from San Pedro is inevitable, the exact date of the
departure is not known as of yet. The Sisters and the staff are still here continuing to serve and
care for the elderly in our Home. We still need your assistance, more than ever.
As of June 1, the Little Sisters of the Poor met with families and made an announcement that
we will be closing our Skilled Nursing Unit located on the second floor. The Residents will be
assessed and those who are able to move to our Assisted Living RCFE Unit will do so. Others
will be relocated to facilities that would be able to meet all of their care needs.
The Sisters also made the announcement at that time that the purchasing agreement between
the Little Sisters of the Poor and Grace Mercado had been canceled. In March 2022, the
Little Sisters removed an underground tank from the property and at that time they found
contaminated vapors in the soil, not from the underground tank but from an unknown source.
Because of this it was mutually agreed that they dissolve the purchasing agreement.
We realize that some of you are apprehensive about donating money to the Little Sisters of the
Poor with the unknown date of our departure. Rest assured your donations will stay with the
Little Sisters of the Poor. For now, the Home really needs your support to care for the Residents.
We desire to continue providing the same quality of care as we always have. Once we know the
departure date for the Little Sisters, we will share more information about how to continue to
support the mission of the Little Sisters of the Poor.
The generosity and support from the community of Los Angeles, and especially San Pedro
and Pals Verdes and beyond has been tremendous. Many of you for years have not only given
monetarily, but have given of your time, talent, love and support, volunteering many waking
hours to assist us with our Home, our Residents, and our events.
In the last 117 years that we have been in Los Angeles, 46 years in San Pedro, it has truly taken
a village believing in our mission and vision of caring for the elderly to make Jeanne Jugan
Residence such a remarkable and loving place. It is with a grateful heart and begging spirit we
ask for your assistance and prayers as we take this final journey here in San Pedro.
