On April 24, 2012, the Little Sisters celebrated National Volunteers Week by honoring all volunteers for their service and dedication. The event started with Holy Mass followed by luncheon and an awarding ceremony.
Before the awards were handed out, Mother Paul expressed her sincere thanks and gratitude to all volunteers. “You bring such great joy to our Residents through the many ways you serve.”
Since 1979 when the Little Sisters moved to San Pedro, we have had a strong volunteer group organized as an Auxiliary of the Knights of Malta under the direction of the Western Association. Today we have 129 volunteers who contributed 27,630 hours of assistance in 2011.
During the award ceremony, two volunteers received a bronze medal of Blessed Gerard the founder of the order of Malta for their 30 years of service. The medal was struck to honor people for extraordinary service.
In addition the Order of Malta awarded seventeen volunteers with medals, badges and certificates based on their years of service. All new candidates have spent over 3 years, and more than 300 hours in service to the Little Sisters.
All 85 volunteers who attended the event felt appreciated. It was a beautiful get-together with the Sisters and representatives of the Order of Malta.
